Setting up a UiO GitHub repository
Setting up a UiO GitHub repository#
In this course we will use GitHub via UiO’s GitHub Enterprise service, at github.uio.no. Below are some quick instructions to get started:
Log in to github.uio.no using your UiO username and password.
Next you need to create a new repository (“repo”):
Click on the green New button.
Fill in a name for your repository.
Set the access setting to Public. (It will only be public to users within UiO’s GitHub service. We need this for it to be easy for us teachers to view all the code repositories.)
Check the Add a README file box.
Click Create repository.
You will automatically be redirected to the home page of your new repository.
More detailed documentation about creating repositories can be found here.
The last step is to clone the new repository to your computer:
Click on the green Code button.
Copy the link, which will look something like this:
https://github.uio.no/your-user/your-repo-name.git
In your terminal, go to the directory where you want your repository to stored and run a
git clone
command with the link you just copied:git clone https://github.uio.no/your-user/your-repo-name.git
(You may be prompted for your UiO username and password.)
You should now have a new directory
your-repo-name
containing your new repo (which so far only contains a single README.md file). The detailed GitHub documentation on cloning repos is here.
